Wooden Flooring

Wooden Flooring

Slate House Signs are very inexpensive considering the amount of work that goes into a Slate house Signs. Another relatively inexpensive addition can be wooden flooring. Some would say – Why use wood flooring, isn’t it expensive, hard to install and does it last as long as tiles? Well…yes, it can be very expensive but wood flooring doesn’t have to be. Many types of wood flooring are very easy for a DIY’er to install and as for longevity. I have gone into Tudor houses where the wood floor looks almost brand new!

I suppose that the first thing that we need to sort out in our minds is – what actually constitutes wood flooring. Okay, that’s an easy one. Not to appear facetious but, ultimately, wood flooring is any flooring product made out of wood.

This can be in the form of solid wood flooring. Here we are talking planks of solid wood, stripped and sawn into the required size, then laid onto the floor and treated. It is the sort of thing you will see in Victorian, Tudor or Georgian houses.

The next section of wood flooring would be, engineered wood flooring. This engineered wooden flooring is made up of layered levels of real wood pressed together. The real wood surface veneer layer is obtainable in a lot of diverse designs and finishes and is also obtainable in many different thicknesses ranging from 0.5mm up to 6mm. A usual veneer being 3.6mm and that can be sanded 4/5 times. In the manufacturing procedure, the layers of real timber run in diverse directions ensuring that it is more dimensionally constant than solid wood, but indistinguishable to solid wooden flooring in look.

Engineered wood flooring is ideal for those areas of the house where solid wood flooring might not be appropriate, such as basements, conservatories or laid on top of under-floor heating.

Another great advantage of engineered wood flooring is that you can get one that clicks together as opposed to tongue-and-groove boards, which are much more difficult to fit.

Bear in mind that wood is a natural material and that the planks will differ, so make certain that you like both the heavily and lightly grained types of wood that you have chosen and also that you find its knots and blemishes appealing.

It’s important to see how well the planks join together on the in-store presentation panels. Check out the quality of the finish and evaluate the products presented by different manufacturers.

The final thing that you need to think about when looking at wood flooring is the finish. Wood can come oiled, lacquered or unfinished. Lacquer is a tough varnish that shields the wood and puts on a shiny finish. Oil, which also protects the wood, is a more natural finish that imparts a nice sheen as it wears. (One can also oil a Slate House Signs if they wish).

However – when you finally get down to it; there is nothing quite so prestigious and downright classy as solid wood flooring. The sumptuousness of the wood, the natural variation of colours and the fact that you know that that floor will be there for many years to come…perhaps even hundreds of years later. And something like that simply screams quality, especially when teamed with some Slate House signs.
